As the US population ages, more men and women age 65+ are choosing to undergo various cosmetic surgery procedures to rejuvenate and refresh their appearance. A recent study presented at this month’s annual meeting of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons found that undergoing cosmetic surgery is not significantly riskier for older patients. The study’s findings included:
- Complications among older adults (1.94 percent) was not statistically significant compared to younger patients (1.84 percent).
- In the study, the mean age of older patients was 69, while the mean age of the younger patients was 39.
- Older patients underwent more facial procedures than the younger patients.
According to 2013 ASPS statistics, men and women age 55+ made up 24 percent of the total cosmetic surgery procedures performed that year, which is a 3 percent increase from 2012. Many of these procedures were rejuvenating face procedures.
