Achieving a toned, flat stomach can often be difficult and elusive. You may put in all the hard work required by eating a healthy diet, getting lots of exercise, and doing crunches every day only to find that your efforts haven’t yielded the results you desire. This is quite normal.
For many people, factors beyond their control such as genetics, the aging process, prior pregnancies, and weight fluctuations can make it challenging to maintain flat abs. At Gonyon Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery, we can perform a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty to help you put the finishing touches on your workout efforts and achieve the toned abdomen you desire.
A tummy tuck is a body contouring procedure performed to remove excess fat and skin from your abdomen. Dr. Gonyon will customize your tummy tuck procedure to address your unique needs and aesthetic goals.
He will evaluate factors such as the amount of excess fat and skin, the tightness or looseness of the abdominal muscles and your cosmetic goals when devising your treatment plan. Based on these factors, Dr. Gonyon will recommend one of the following techniques:
The standard, or traditional tummy tuck, removes loose, sagging skin and excess fat across the abdominal area. A long incision is made across the lower abdomen. If the muscles lying vertically across the abdomen are stretched and separated, then Dr. Gonyon will tighten them with sutures. Abdominal fat and skin are reshaped and repositioned, and then excess abdominal skin is removed.
For only minimal sagging and excess fat of the abdominal area, a mini or reduced tummy tuck technique may be used. In this technique, a much smaller incision is made in the area below the navel. Using this incision, Dr. Gonyon can remove a smaller area of moderate sagging below the belly button. The tightening of the abdominal muscles may or may not be performed, depending on the condition of your muscles and your goals.
Some abdominoplasty candidates have sagging skin not only around the abdomen but also around the sides of the lower back. This more extensive skin sagging may be removed with an extended or “circumferential” tummy tuck. Using a slightly longer incision than the other techniques, Dr. Gonyon can remove the excess fat and skin extending from the abdomen around to the lower back.
For any of these techniques, liposuction may be used in conjunction to achieve the optimal result.

Patients treated with a tummy tuck often see:
After an abdominoplasty, you can expect swelling in your abdomen for a few weeks. Fortunately, medication can ease any pain and discomfort you may be facing. Dr. Gonyon will recommend you go on short walks after the procedure to prevent blood clotting. In addition, he’ll suggest you refrain from vigorous physical activity for at least six weeks so you can avoid straining in your mid-section.
While a tummy tuck will leave a scar, it will gradually fade over time and can be hidden easily under clothing. You’ll likely be able to resume work and your daily activities after a few weeks. We offer medical-grade silicone scar therapy at the practice that can help speed up the recovery and improve the look of your scars.
