If you or your child are bothered by the appearance of your ears, otoplasty or ear pinning surgery may be a great option. Ear surgery can help create a more natural shape, projection and size to the ear and create more balance and proportion to the ears and face. Changing the appearance of the ears can have a profound impact on your appearance and self-esteem.
Dr. Gonyon can perform ear pinning surgery on adults or children whose ears have reached a mature size, about age 7, to help pin back or reshape the conchal bowl (the part of the ear that can make the cup of the ear look too prominent).
Ear pinning surgery is a surgical technique performed to reshape the ears, often to move the ears closer to the head or make the ears appear smaller. When you come to our office for an ear surgery consultation, Dr. Gonyon will use computer imaging software to give you an idea of what your or your child’s new ears may look like.
With this information, he can make an informed decision about the extent of surgery that will be required to correct you or your child’s ears. To perform an otoplasty, Dr. Gonyon will need to make incisions along the backside of the ears. In some cases, incisions in the folds on the front of the ear may also be necessary. All of these incisions will be carefully hidden to minimize visible scarring.
Through these incisions, Dr. Gonyon will reduce cartilage and gently reshape the ears to bring them into proper alignment with the head. Once this has been accomplished, dissolvable or long-lasting sutures will be placed inside the ears to help them maintain their new shape.
