Do Breast Implants Last Forever?

With breast implants, you can achieve the fuller, more attractive breasts you’ve been longing for. If you’re interested in breast implants, you may be wondering whether they last forever. After all, you’re likely interested in the long-term rather than a short-term solution to better breasts. Let’s take a closer look at the two types of breast implants you can choose from and the longevity you can expect if you pursue breast augmentation surgery.

Types of Breast Implants

Dr. Gonyon offers saline and silicone implants. Saline implants feature a silicone shell and are filled with sterile saltwater. If they rupture, the salt water will absorb into your body and you can safely replace your implants. Saline implants are affordable and recommended for women who are at least 18 years of age.

Silicone implants are pre-filled with a cohesive gel and create a more natural appearance than saline implants. If they do rupture, however, you must receive an MRI imaging test to confirm the rupture. Silicone implants are specifically created for women who are 22 years of age or older.

The Longevity of Breast Implants

Over the years, breast implants have dramatically improved in quality. While there is no expiration date on them, they don’t last a lifetime. The good news, however, is that they’re long lasting. The average saline or silicone implants may last anywhere from 10 to 20 years. If you’d like to remove them sooner because of a complication or cosmetic concern, you may do so.

Why You May Want to Remove or Replace Breast Implants

There may come a point where you’ll want to remove or replace breast implants because they bring you discomfort or no longer satisfy you. You might want your breasts to look larger or smaller than you did when you first received implants. If so, you can replace them.

In the rare event, you experience pain, numbness, swelling, or capsular contracture, you may need to remove or replace your implants. Sagging skin that often comes with aging may also warrant removal or replacement.
