Are Botox Injections Safe?

Even if you take great care of your skin and stay away from the sun, you’ll likely experience dynamic wrinkles as you get older. The good news is that they can be resolved temporarily through the use of Botox. Botox injections can smooth out signs of aging on your face so you look rejuvenated. One of the most common questions that Dr. Gonyon receives regarding Botox is “How safe is Botox?” Let’s dive deeper into the answer to this question.

How Botox Works

Botox is the brand name for a purified chemical formula called botulinum toxin. Botulinum toxin effectively blocks muscular signals that create fine lines and wrinkles. After a single Botox injection, you can enjoy a smoother, younger-looking complexion instantly.

Since Botox is designed for dynamic wrinkles that appear when you make facial expressions, Dr. Gonyon recommends this treatment to treat signs of aging in the forehead, eye area, nose, and upper lip area.

You don’t have to be concerned about its safety because Botox has been approved by the FDA in 2002. In fact, it’s one of the safest drugs on the market and administered more than 3.5 million times per year in the United States.

Good Candidates for Botox

If you’re in search of a non-invasive method to improve signs of aging but are not interested in surgery, you may be a good candidate for Botox. As long as you’re in reasonably good health, you can use Botox to look years younger.

Although Botox is often associated with people who are in their 40s, 50s, and 60s, Dr. Gonyon recommends it to younger patients who would like to stop wrinkles from popping up.  By receiving Botox earlier in your life, you can stop your facial muscles from contracting and causing wrinkles every time you laugh, frown, and squint.

Dr. Gonyon discourages Botox for patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, diagnosed with neuromuscular diseases or taking aminoglycoside medications.
