5 Questions I forgot to ask at my Breast Augmentation Consultation – an insider perspective

This year I decided to take the leap and get the breast augmentation that I have wanted for years.  I thought to myself “I’m working for an extremely talented surgeon, now is the time!”  I have a fair amount of knowledge when it comes to breast augmentation, so when it came to the day of my consult it felt like a breeze, until I got home and realized I was so excited that I forgot a few things.

I knew the answers to most of the important things…

Ask if your surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) and if the surgeon is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).  The answer for Dr. Gonyon is YES to both.

If your surgery is going to take place in an ambulatory care facility or surgery center, you’ll want to make sure that the center is  certified by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF). This assures you that the center meets or exceeds standards for excellence in patient care and safety.  Gonyon Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery’s on-site surgery center has been accredited by AAAASF since opening in 2009.

It’s important to know what type of implants your surgeon offers. Dr. Gonyon only uses Allergan Natrelle®  implants.  Natrelle® implants offer the highest safety standards paired with over 700 size and shape options.  These features allow us to give customized implant options to help you reach your goals.

What type of “look” are you going for? Do you want a subtle and more natural enhancement or are you going for a more dramatic and augmented look?  You want to make sure your breast augmentation meets your goals. Your surgeon should listen carefully to your goals and give you options that fit your desired results.

On to the questions I forgot to ask…

I decided early on that I was looking for a dramatic augmented look.  But, I forgot to ask about stretch marks.  Some women develop stretch marks with larger implants sizes depending on their skin quality. Will I have stretch marks from the larger implant size I’ve chosen?  After my physical exam and breast measurements, Dr. Gonyon is confident that I won’t have any issues with stretch marks.

Depending on weight gain/loss and if you have had children, some women need a breast lift in conjunction with an augmentation.  Do I need a breast lift or will an augmentation get me to my desired look?  I was pleased to hear I don’t need a lift at this time, but Dr. Gonyon reminded me to consider that after children and as I get older that there may be the need for one.

I know that capsular contracture is a complication in which the scar tissue that forms around the implant becomes hard and may be uncomfortable, but how common is it? Dr. Gonyon helped explain the research.  Studies have shown contracture rates to be anywhere from 5% to 10%. While no one can tell for certain who is going to have this problem, Dr. Gonyon uses specific techniques to help prevent it including incision site, implant type, and pocket position.  Using the Keller Funnel helps reduce the abrasiveness when inserting the implant which also helps reduce the chances of capsular contracture.

Like a lot of women, my weight has always fluctuated. How much will my weight fluctuating affect my implants? When I asked Dr. Gonyon this question he said depending on how much I were to lose/gain, say 25-30lbs., I could expect to possibly lose/gain about 100cc’s.

My last question was if having implants will affect the shape and size of my areola? Dr. Gonyon assured me that having an augmentation alone does not change the size of the areola. Occasionally, after breastfeeding, the areola may appear larger and can appear fuller after breastfeeding following an augmentation.

I definitely feel like all my questions have been answered…I am so excited for my surgery, stay tuned to hear what surgery day is like!
