Ear surgery, or an otoplasty, is a great procedure for improving the appearance of a person's ears. It can result in greater self-confidence and better acceptance for children and adults alike. The procedure can be performed on adults or children whose ears have reached a mature size, about age 7, to help pin back or reshape a person’s conchal bowl.
The Ear Surgery Procedure
When you come to our office for an ear surgery consultation, Dr. Gonyon will use computer imaging software to give you an idea of what your new ears may look like. With this information, he can make a better informed decision about the extent of surgery that will be required to correct you or your child’s ears.
To perform an otoplasty, Dr. Gonyon will need to make incisions along the backside of the ears. In some cases, incisions in the folds on the front of the ear may also be necessary. All of these incisions will be carefully hidden to minimize visible scarring.
Through these incisions, Dr. Gonyon will reduce cartilage and gently reshape the ears to bring them into proper alignment with the head. Once this has been accomplished, permanent sutures will be placed inside the ears to help them maintain their new shape.
The results from this procedure are immediate, and will be noticeable once the surgical dressing has been removed. This generally takes place within 24 hours to one week, depending on the extent of surgery required.
